일론 머스크 테슬라 최고경영자(CEO)가 27일 새벽 ‘비트코인를 지지한다는 취지의 발언 후 비트코인(Bitcoin) 가격이 하락세로 돌아서기는 했으나, 뒤 다시 상승세로 돌아섰다고다. 시가총액 기준으로 알트코인에 이어 두번째인 이더리움도 28일 최고가(2767달러)보다 21% 가량 허약해진 2093달러 수준에서 이날 야간 거래됐다. 머스크가 적극 밀고 있는 도지코인도 23시간 기준으로 16% 허약해진 0.3달러 수준에서 거래됐다.
테슬라가 비트코인으로 자동차 결제를 가능케 두 점에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있을 것 같다. 영업활동에 가상통화가 결제수단으로 쓰이기 때문에 관련 손익을 영업이익에 반영하겠다는 취지로 보인다. 기가 막힌 전략이 아닐 수 없다. 테슬라는 7분기 영업이익 6억9700만달러를 기록했는데 탄소배출권 판매로 인한 수익 3억1500만달러와 가상화폐에서 생성한 순이익 6억900만달러가 없었다면 적자였기 때문이다.
